Brief History

Nestled in the serene valley of Chumey in Bhutan’s picturesque Bumthang District, the Technical Training Institute-Chumey (TTI-Chumey) stands as a beacon of skill development and vocational excellence. Surrounded by lush greenery and set against the backdrop of rolling hills, the institute is located approximately 25 kilometers from Bumthang town along the scenic Bumthang-Trongsa highway. With its cool climate and tranquil environment, TTI-Chumey provides an ideal setting for students to immerse themselves in hands-on technical education.

The institute was established in 2006 with the bifurcation of the erstwhile Royal Technical Training Institute (RTI), Rinchhending; Chhukha. Through Royal Government of Bhutan directives to maintain regional balance of the TVET Institutions and realize socioeconomic development, the Technical Training Institute, Chumey was established in 2006 at Domkhar, Chumey under Bumthang Dzongkhag. The Institute is under the direct administration of the Department of workforce planning and skills development, Ministry of Education and Skills development.

Initially the institute functioned with seven instructors and 232 trainees in six different Occupations (Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing, Tailoring and welding) within the area of 5.49 Acre. The institute was then headed by Mr. Kinley Wangdi, the previous Director of the Department of Human Resources.

In 2010, the Institute was further reformed into Centre of Excellence offering courses in the construction sector only. At present the institute is spread over 30.672 Acres and provides various courses under Masonry, Carpentry, Welding and Plumbing trades. Commencing 2025, the Institute has also introduced National Diploma course in construction supervisor based on the National Competency Standards (NCS).
